I’d add some large, framed black and white photos – either photos taken from your travels or abstract photos (go outside and take photos of interesting patters like the clouds or bark on a tree or fence posts or anything else). The black and white will be classy and won’t clash with anything.

I’d also add some really big floor plans to fill up some of the dead space in the room.

Most importantly, I’d add some colorful, fun pillows and throws to break up the giant blobs of brown – brown couch, brown chairs, brown table, brown carpet – all bunched up and probably focused on a TV. In interior design world, all of that is a giant no-no. I’d get some cream pillows and some colored, lively pillows to break up the extreme brown palette. And maybe a throw or quilt. Or reupholster a chair or two to break up the darn brown.

If you see a bigger, cheap coffee table at a garage sale or on freecycle, I’d also get that – it would be more in line with the scale of the room. Likewise, if you see one that’s free or cheap, I’d get a carpet that doesn’t repeat the brown. Not sure what would work with the brown and blue – maybe some shade of orange, cream if it’s washable for the baby, and I’m sure there are other colors that would work.

Try Overstock for some great wall art. I have two pieces from there — not exactly one-of-a-kind, but we got some limited edition canvas prints that we love. Also, IKEA has a great selection of large-scale and inexpensive pieces. P.S. The blue is great!

I even went and found this post for you with links! http://thisplaceisnowahome.wordpress.com/2011/07/06/she-says-art/ I wish I had more walls so I could print some gallery wraps. The downside of having an artist for a husband is too much original art from him and friends. Looking forward to seeing the rest of the house someday.
