Here’s an article that talks about it: http://planetgreen.discovery.com/home-garden/green-your-move-use-recyclable.html

“3. Rent moving crates: A number of moving companies, such as the Continental Moving Company, Earth-Friendly Moving, and Rent-a-Crate lease out reusable plastic moving crates. Crushproof and stackable, the crates get picked up by the moving company as soon as you’ve moved in, so you don’t have the hassle of breaking down boxes and figuring out whether to trash them or store them for later use.”

I thought that was a pretty cool idea, although it probably wouldn’t work if you were outside a major metro area.

We got boxes on Craigslist cheap and resold them after the move. Garment boxes are awesome for quick packing, but can’t be stacked in my experience, making them a pain in the van.

Also, you can use sheets and towels between breakables, rather than packing material. Added bonus: you’ll need fewer boxes for sheets and towels!

Any old box will do. It depends on how you are moving…

I’d look for smaller boxes for books, since books are heavy.

Also I found garmet boxes (that are like a hanging closet) are great, because you don’t have to fold clothes, just take them on hangers and hang them in one fell swoop in the garment box)

If you don’t mind moving your stuff in liquor boxes, they are very sturdy. In high school I worked at an ice cream shop, and I found that the sugar cone boxes were terrific for packing small breakables. I also like copy paper boxes.

Happy packing!
