I sent a 1995 Chevy S-10 “the Red Sled” to that junkyard in the sky a few years back. It was a said day, he was a good friend.

“Things got bad toward the end. I had found a newer friend, and he knew then it was only a matter of time. I tried to show him the numbers, he just didn’t understand this magic blue book and the figures it spat out. The more I explained to him how Dr. Monroe’s numbers would be so much greater, the more he argued his case. Like those stone walls you see as you drive through a small Connecticut town, he stood firm. He tried to hide his worsening condition for as long as possible when one day he just couldn’t go any more.

I watched as a small rainbow tear fell from within him, he accepted, it was time.”

I had a 1993 F150 as my first car. Kacie and I knew what it was like to be cool. ;)

You’ve had quite a few beaters indeed. The car I drove in high school was a 1984 Ford F-150. It was older than me. It still runs, though has its issues, and the floorboard is starting to rust out. It’s lovingly called “Creampuff.”

These days, I drive Shirley. Cuz surely we will get there!

I totally remember half of these cars fm college. esp Tina Turner. I remember you introducing me to her soon after we’d met and I thought you were a bit crazy… :)

And I can totally relate. My first two cars were total beaters that broke down ALL the TIME. My all-time fave breakdown story happened on a Saturday I had to go to work at 8 am (at my part-time job in high school), when it was snowing like 5 inches, and I just happened to conveniently forget my cell phone at home. My stupid truck broke down halfway to town in the middle of nowhere, several miles from the nearest house, and I had to sit outside in the freezing snow waving like a maniac until finally a nice lady picked me up and offered to drive me the rest of the way into town… (Turns out she knew my parents but I was soooo grateful to her lest I would have frozen to death)

I hear you though. After umpteen breakdowns in college (and my dad was close enough that he would come get my car each time and tow it home to fix it), I decided to buy my Ford Escape brand new. It was a bit expensive, of course, but it’s so worth the money to not be stranded and broke down all the time!!! My mom has it now, but I think altogether we’ve had it for almost five years and never had any (major) problems.

When I was a teenager I drove my dad’s 1989 Nissan 200 with over 212,000 miles on. The engine caught fire while I was driving it. I called my dad and said something like, “There’s a problem with the car.” He, too, expected the car to be fine after a little fixing until until he arrived to see billowing smoke with the fire department hosing it down.

I also loved this post, because my husband and I went through quite a few cars like yours… just wish I’d thought to name them such clever names!
